Parents everywhere dread hearing those two words from their children, “I’m bored.” Fear not, we’ve got you covered with a list of free ways to keep the family entertained!

Topeka

Hit the trail. Whether you prefer to walk or ride, Topeka offers some great trails just waiting for you to explore!

Take in a Rossville Rattlers game.
Admission to all home games in Rossville’s historic Joe Campbell Memorial Stadium are free. Fun fact – this stadium features one of the oldest grandstands in the U.S.

Take a First Friday Artwalk.
Each first Friday of the month, participating businesses across Topeka host special artist showings, musical performances and other special events. Be sure to visit the downtown Topeka CapFed® branch on Kansas Avenue for our special First Friday events!

Check out events at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library.
The library has an entire schedule of fun events planned this summer for all ages, including free movies, concerts and other fun activities.

Enjoy a First Friday outdoor concert. Enjoy an outdoor concert from local performers on first Fridays in downtown Topeka.

Tour the Kansas State Capitol. Learn the stories behind the beautiful murals and architecture and view the Senate Chamber and Representative Hall in a guided tour or explore on your own. Brave guests can even get a bird’s eye view of the city from atop the building’s 304-feet high dome.

Spend a day at the Shawnee County Fair. A favorite family tradition, the Shawnee County Fair at the Topeka Expocentre has something for everyone.

Catch an evening concert in Gage Park.
Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and relax to the music of local blues and jazz bands in the Gage Park Amphitheater.

Go stargazing. Join the Northeast Kansas Amateur Astronomy League for one of their open house star parties at Farpoint Observatory.

Lawrence

Spend time at the Lawrence Public Library.
The library has a whole host of events planned to keep all ages entertained.

Tour the KU Natural History Museum.
Admission to the museum is free, however, it does welcome contributions from visitors. Watch a colony of bees hard at work or view one of the world’s first panorama exhibits depicting mammals in their natural surroundings.

Enjoy a picnic or nature walk in Clinton State Park.
Spread out a blanket or grab a picnic table and relax while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Enjoy Final Fridays in Downtown Lawrence.
On the last Friday of each month, you can find great local art on display throughout Lawrence’s downtown businesses.

Visit Civil War sites. Lawrence is a town rich in history from the Civil War era. Stop by the Lawrence Visitor Center to pick up information on local Civil War sites for a self-guided tour.

Spend a day at Centennial Park. This 35-acre park offers picnic sites, a large skate park with ramps and stairs to skate on and an 18-hole disc golf course.

Check out WeekEnders at Crown Center.
Enjoy food trucks and local artisans followed by a family favorite movie.

Visit Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead.
This family attraction designed to resemble a Kansas family farm is free Monday through Thursday.

Tour the Federal Reserve Kansas City Money Museum. This free museum has something for all ages, including art projects, the region’s largest cash vault and interactive exhibits about the economy.

Stroll through the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
More than 34,500 pieces of art are on display in this free museum. When the weather is nice, bring a blanket and take in the city’s scenery from the museum lawn.

Explore the scenic trails and bikeways. Whether you walk, jog or ride, Kansas City is filled with scenic trails.
