Back to School Tips

The first year of college can be stressful for incoming freshmen. You’ve packed your bags and said goodbye to your parents, but now the real challenge begins. These seven tips will not only help you survive your first year of college, but you’ll thrive in academic and personal success.

Tour Campus – Before the start of classes you should take a tour of campus. You may not know where your classes or the buildings on campus are located. This will ensure you aren’t stressed and scrambling the first morning.

Get Familiar with Your Peers – Your roommates and the people in your residence hall are the people you will spend the most time with. They will also be able to relate to similar experiences and emotions you may be going through.  Let these people be your safety net away from home.

Be the Ideal Student – Be as organized as possible. Get a planner, wall calendar or download an app, whatever works for you. It’s easy to put things off and wait until the last minute to complete an assignment. Due dates approach faster than you think.

Go to Class – Sleeping in and skipping that 8:00 a.m. class may be tempting, but it is not ideal for a successful semester. In class, you learn vital information regarding the subject, not to mention info about tests and changes in due dates.

Get to Know Your Instructors – There are many benefits to getting to know your instructors, especially later in the semester, if you run into issues. Instructors schedule office hours primarily for meeting with students, so take advantage of them, when you need help.

Get Involved in Campus Activities – Students often struggle with homesickness and the feeling of not belonging. An easy solution is joining an organization on campus. Whether that’s a club, sports team, Greek life or volunteering – get involved. You’ll have the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills, and feel better connected to your school.

Treat Yourself - For a first-time student, a full week of classes can be stressful. Set aside time for activities you enjoy and will help you relax. Take a yoga class, watch your favorite TV show, or write in your journal. Be good to yourself, and give your brain a break.
