What's Changing
As part of this upgrade, the timing of when Bill Pay payments are withdrawn from your account will change. This upgrade affects when funds are withdrawn, not when your payments are delivered.
To help ensure on-time delivery, payments will be withdrawn earlier:
- Electronic payments: Previously, funds were withdrawn on your selected payment date. Going forward, funds will be withdrawn 1 business day before the deliver-by date.
- Check payments: Previously, funds were withdrawn on the selected payment date or when the check was presented for payment. Going forward, funds will be withdrawn 5 business days before the deliver-by date.
What This Means for You
Your benefits of this enhancement:
- An accurate view of your available balance by setting aside funds for scheduled payments
- More consistent timing of debits for Bill Pay transactions
- Reduced risk of overdrafts or missed payments
- More payment options by offering instant and same day payments to participating billers
What to keep in mind:
- Funds will leave your account earlier than they do today
- No changes to your deliver-by-date or scheduled payments
- Be sure funds are available before the withdrawal date
- Any payments in a “Processing” status on September 19th will be debited from your account as they have prior to the upgrade: on the deliver-by date, or when the check clears your account.

Bill Pay FAQs
-
Your payments are still going out on time. The difference is that your money will come out of your account earlier than it used to.
Bill Pay will continue to offer both electronic and check payments, with some new and improved features. No more waiting for the check to clear for some check payments. They will all process the same way, so you know exactly when the funds will be debited. Overnight checks will no longer be available. In some cases, eligible billers may offer Same Day or Instant payment options, which will be identified by a lightning bolt icon. These faster payment options have a $5 fee and availability varies by biller.
-
We're enhancing Bill Pay to provide a better overall payment experience. Funds are now withdrawn earlier in the payment process to provide a more accurate available balance in bill pay, fewer payment surprises, and more options when scheduling.
-
If you are choosing the earliest available payment date, you will receive a message immediately letting you know you don’t have available funds for the payment. For future dated payments, the payment will fail after several attempts to debit the account. You will be notified of the failed payment by email.
-
You can continue scheduling payments the same way but pay extra attention to the earlier withdraw date and ensure funds are available.
-
They will continue processing on your scheduled dates, but the timing of when funds are withdrawn will reflect the new process starting September 19.
-
Any payments in a “Processing” status on September 19th will be debited from your account as they have prior to the upgrade: on the deliver-by date, or when the check clears your account.
-
Payment and withdrawal timing will adjust to the previous business day when a scheduled payment falls on a weekend or holiday.
-
Same day or Instant payment options allow eligible billers to receive payments faster than standard delivery. You will know if a biller offers these expedited options because they will be identified by a lightning bolt icon next to the Pay button. These faster payment options have a $5 fee and the money is withdrawn instantly.
