At Capitol Federal®, protecting your information and accounts is our priority. Bank impersonation scams are increasingly common. Criminals may pretend to represent a trusted financial institution, including Capitol Federal, to obtain account information, login credentials, or security codes. Understanding how these scams work can help protect you, your personal information and your business.
🚨 Fraud Alert
Scammers may spoof Capitol Federal phone numbers and claim they are calling about suspicious transactions or online banking activity. Never share passwords, PINs, account credentials, or one-time security codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
What is a Bank Impersonation Scam?
A bank impersonation scam occurs when a fraudster pretends to work for a financial institution and contacts customers by phone, text, email, or other digital channels. Their goal is to gain access to sensitive information that can be used to commit fraud or take over accounts.
One tactic is caller ID spoofing, which can make a fraudulent call appear to come from a legitimate bank phone number. Scammers may claim they’re calling about suspicious transactions or login activity and use convincing details to gain your trust.
How Do These Scams Work?
Recent reports indicate scammers are impersonating CapFed’s Treasury Management, claiming to be team members calling to verify suspicious transactions or login activity. The scammers may ask for login credentials or questions about how you access online banking. In some cases, they have even encouraged customers to look up the Treasury Management phone number on our website to make the call appear legitimate.
To build credibility, scammers may:
⚠️ Claim there is suspicious activity on your account
❓ Ask questions about how you access online banking
💻 Request login credentials or other sensitive information
📱 Encourage you to look up the phone number online to make the call seem legitimate
Red Flags:
🚩 Unexpected calls about your account or online banking
🚩 Urgency or pressure to act immediately
🚩 Requests for passwords, PINs or one-time security codes
🚩 A caller asking you to provide or verify sensitive information
🚩 A caller relying on a familiar phone number as proof that the call is legitimate
