Contactless Payments FAQs

Contactless Payments FAQs

General FAQS

What is the technology behind tapping to pay?

Tapping to pay uses short-range wireless technology to make secure payments between a contactless chip card and a contactless-enabled checkout terminal. When you tap your card near the Contactless Symbol, your payment is sent for authorization.

What does the Contactless Indicator and the Contactless Symbol mean?

The Contactless Indicator shows acceptance. When featured on a card, it means the card can be used to tap to pay. When featured on a checkout terminal or on store signage, it means a merchant accepts tapping to pay.

The Contactless Symbol indicates where you tap your contactless chip card on the checkout terminal to make a payment.

How do I know if my card or device can make contactless payments?

You'll see the Contactless Indicator on your card.

How close does my contactless chip card need to be to the contactless checkout terminal?

Your contactless chip card just needs to be within 1 to 2 inches of the Contactless Symbol to initiate a payment.

How long do I need to tap my contactless chip card on the checkout terminal?

One to two seconds should do it.

Do I actually have to tap my contactless chip card on the checkout terminal?

No, actual tapping is not necessary.

How do I tap my Visa® True Blue® Debit contactless chip card device at the checkout terminal?

It works best when your contactless chip card is held flat over the Contactless Symbol, versus held at an angle.

When exactly do I tap to pay?

Once you are prompted to pay (by the cashier, a light on the checkout terminal, etc.), place your contactless chip card within 1 to 2 inches of the Contactless Symbol on the terminal and follow the prompts.

What’s so great about tapping to pay with Visa True Blue Debit card?

Tapping to pay with a Visa True Blue Debit contactless chip card is secure, convenient and touch-free – perfect for places like fast-food restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops, vending machines, taxis and more. Just look for the Contactless Symbol   at checkout. Tapping to pay is secure because each transaction is accompanied by a one-time code, just like contact EMV. Unlike cash, tapping to pay provides an electronic record of your purchases and gives you all the great functionality and convenience of a Visa True Blue Debit card.

How does this technology compare to Apple Pay?

Contactless payments, including Visa True Blue Debit contactless chip cards and Apple Pay use the same NFC (Near Field Communication) technology.

Can I use my Visa True Blue Debit contactless chip card to tap to pay outside the U.S.?

Yes. You can tap to pay at millions of places around the world, wherever you see the Contactless Symbol. In countries like Australia, Canada, the UK and France, over half of retailers currently accept contactless payments. If tapping to pay is not available at a location, you can simply swipe or insert your Visa True Blue Debit contactless chip card at checkout.

Is tapping to pay secure?

Yes. Here’s why:

1. Each Visa True Blue Debit contactless chip card carries the same trusted security as a contact chip card.

2. The one-time code generated every time a contactless chip card  is used at an in-store contactless-enabled terminal protects your payment information, making it extremely effective in reducing counterfeit fraud.

3. You can’t pay accidentally—your contactless chip card must be within 2 inches of the terminal for the transaction to take place. And you won’t be billed twice, even if you accidentally tap twice.

4. Tapping to pay with your Visa True Blue Debit contactless chip card helps you avoid touching surfaces at checkout.

What information is transmitted from my contactless chip card when I tap to pay?

The contactless chip card securely transmits information including the account number, expiration date, and a one-time code that changes for every in-person transaction. The code is different than the code encoded on the magnetic stripe of a Visa True Blue Debit card.

I heard people can “skim” information from a contactless chip card. What does that mean?

Visa True Blue Debit contactless chip transactions generate a one-time, transaction-specific code. Due to the nature of the code and additional fraud protection processes built into the Visa network, it is difficult to use skimmed cardholder information for fraudulent purchases. As a result, fraud from skimming is very unlikely and limited in scope. You can also rest assured that Visa True Blue Debit cards offer protection from any unauthorized use with Visa’s Zero Liability Policy.

Can I unknowingly make a purchase if I am in close proximity to a contactless-enabled payment terminal?

No. The technology behind tapping to pay requires the merchant to initiate the payment. Next, the contactless chip card must be tapped or held within 2 inches of the contactless-enabled terminal in order for a transaction to take place.

Can I be charged twice if I have more than one contactless chip card in my wallet?

No. Contactless-enabled checkout terminals will only communicate with one card at a time. If you have more than one contactless chip card in your wallet, you should tap the individual card you want to use, rather than tap your whole wallet.

Will I have to pay any fees to use my contactless card?
There are no additional fees to use your card when using your signature to authorize transactions.

My grocery store won't let me run my debit card as a credit transaction. Why?
Some stores are indicating PIN entry is a more secure verification method. Please remember the first line of security for every contactless chip transaction is the one-time code that is generated every time the card is used at a contactless- enabled terminal. By requiring customers to enter a PIN, the stores are not allowing consumers the ability to choose their method of validation. Capitol Federal continues to support Visa's requirement to offer consumers the ability to choose their method of validation by allowing PIN bypass.

Do I have to enter my PIN?

Merchant card terminals continue to be upgraded to accept contactless cards, and your experience will vary. We recognize the process of determining when to sign for a transaction and when to enter your PIN may be challenging. If you would like to sign for your transaction, some common options that will allow you to do so when prompted for your PIN, depending on the merchant, include:

  • Select "credit"

  • Select "Visa debit"

  • Press the red cancel button

  • Press the green button
Additionally, you may ask the cashier how to sign for the transaction when prompted for your PIN.

security and acceptance FAQS

How does my contactless-enabled card protect my information?
Every time you use your True Blue Visa debit card at a contactless-enabled terminal, the transaction is accompanied by a one-time code that changes each time. The different codes make it extremely effective in reducing counterfeit fraud.

Am I still protected by Visa’s Zero Liability Policy?

Yes. If your card is lost or stolen, Visa’s Zero Liability Policy covers you. This means you are protected against unauthorized use. Notify Capitol Federal immediately of any unauthorized use.

Where can I tap to pay?
You can tap to pay where you see the Contactless Symbol on a checkout terminal. Millions of places around the world accept contactless payments, including fast-food restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, retail pharmacies, vending machines, taxis and more.

Can account data from a Visa contactless card be stolen and fraudulently used?
All Visa cards offer protection from unauthorized use of your card or account information. Visa wireless technology offers another layer of security when used at a contactless-enabled terminal. While Visa wireless technology generates a one-time use code for each transaction, it's virtually impossible to counterfeit, the account information may still be subject to compromise. Notify CapFed® immediately of any unauthorized use and know you are protected with Visa’s Zero Liability Policy.

Do I need to use a PIN with my Visa contactless card?
In most cases, you’ll want to sign for debit purchases – just like you do today. You may also use a PIN if you prefer; transaction fees apply.

card functionality FAQS

I’m not sure I’ve seen a contactless-enabled terminal. Is there anything different about how I pay?
More of the places you like to shop are transitioning to contactless-enabled terminals every day. The checkout process is only slightly different than usual. If the retailer has a contactless-enabled terminal, simply hold your card flat over the Contactless Symbol, versus at an angle, for one to two seconds. If the retailer is not equipped to read the contactless card, insert or swipe your card as you would today.

Can I still swipe my card to pay?

Yes. If a merchant is not yet contactless-enabled, simply swipe your card. Select CREDIT and sign for your purchase, if necessary. You may also use your PIN if you prefer, transaction fees apply. If the merchant is contactless-enabled, you will be able to hold your card over the Contactless Symbol for one to two seconds for the transaction to occur.

I tried to use my card at a contactless terminal but it didn’t work. Why?

Some merchants may have installed contactless-enabled terminals, but haven’t activated them yet. In these cases, simply swipe or insert your card to pay.

Can I still access my account at the ATM?
Yes. You can use your contactless card at the ATM just like always. Be sure to insert the chip end of your debit card into the ATM with the chip facing up. Your card will remain in the ATM until your transaction is complete.
