Plan Ahead For Disasters

Plan Ahead For Disasters

be prepared with an emergency plan.

CapFed® is prepared with a disaster and recovery plan in the event of any type of catastrophic event.  The plan protects and recovers electronic data and provides availability of cash and customer service as quickly as possible following a wide-range disaster.

Just as we are prepared, we would like to help you and your family be prepared, as well. Use the list below to help create disaster preparedness kits. For more information, visit www.ready.gov.

Important Items Needed in an Emergency:

  • Identification to help recover lost records, including:
    • Driver's license or state-issued ID
    • Insurance cards
    • Social security cards
    • Passports
    • Copies of birth certificates
  • Essential needs like, food, water, medications, flashlights and a first aid kit
  • Your cellular devices and extra power banks and chargers. If your checkbook or paper bank statements are lost in a disaster, you still have control with True Blue Online allowing you to pay bills and pay others with People Pay or External Transfers
  • ATM cards, debit and credit cards as well as account numbers and toll-free numbers for your banks, credit card issuers, brokerage firms and insurance companies
  • Checkbook as a backup to True Blue Online
  • Family and local phone numbers written down

For Power Outages or Disruptions in Communications, Consider the Following:

  • Seek alternative power methods for devices, like crank or solar-powered radio/flashlight/cell phone charger
  • Have a family plan on how you will communicate with one another and how to keep your elderly members safe
  • Utilize a generator, but ONLY outdoors and away from windows
  • Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices
  • Know where the manual release lever of your electric garage door opener is located and how to operate it
  • Keep your car's gas tank full
  • Do not use a gas stove oven to heat your home
  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed
  • Have extra canned foods available, should refrigeration not be available

For Weather-Related Incidents, Consider the Following:

  • Make everyone put on a pair of sturdy shoes in case of debris
  • Secure pets in a safe room or in pet carriers that you can take along as you seek shelter
  • Gather bottles of water and non-perishable snacks while you seek safe shelter
  • Take your wallet, purse, car keys and house keys with you
  • Have a battery-powered radio or weather radio with you so you know when the immediate threat has passed
  • Store a few games or toys in your shelter to occupy children during a storm event

Take These Steps to Protect Yourself Against Cyber Attacks:

  • Don’t share PINs or passwords with anyone on the phone, by text or online. Use devices that use biometric scans when possible (e.g. fingerprint scanner or facial recognition)
  • Keep software applications and operating systems up-to-date
  • Create strong passwords by using at least 12 characters and a mix of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and special characters
  • Watch for suspicious activity that asks you to do something right away on a website or in an email. Do not click on links in texts or emails from people you don’t know. Scammers can create fake links to websites
  • Protect your home and/or business using a secure Internet connection and Wi-Fi network, and change passwords regularly
  • Check your account statements and credit reports regularly
  • Use trusted antivirus and anti-malware solutions
  • Back up your files regularly in an encrypted file or encrypted file storage device
  • Capitol Federal® will NEVER contact you and ask for confidential information over the telephone, or by text. If you feel you have provided this information to someone in error, please call 1-888-822-7333 to report the incident
