1. Rummage through your pantry, fridge and freezer. If an item is expired or damaged, throw it out! However, if it’s not expired, think about donating it to a local food pantry. You’ll be amazed at how much room you’ll have once you’ve finished.
2. Go through your records and only keep the most important pieces of paper. To avoid identity theft, don’t throw away things with your name, address or social security number on it. Instead, make sure they’re shredded. CapFed® is tentatively planning our free community shred days in the spring, if conditions allow. More information will be posted on the CapFed's Shred Days page.
3. Closet clean-out. If you have articles of clothing you haven’t worn in several seasons, think about getting rid of them. Give to a charity or donate to animal shelter to use.
4. Organize your basement or garage. It’s best to do this on a nicer day because pulling everything out and starting from scratch can be a good idea. Begin by grouping items together, like holiday or sports items, and store them in easy to access areas. Also, think about items you’ll eventually need, like patio equipment, and store that near the front so you can grab it quickly.
5. Avoid sentimentality. Although it might hurt a little, if you’re hanging on to items that don’t have a place in your new, tidier home, consider tossing or donating them. You’ll be happy you did.
