Teaching Your Kids to be Safe Online
As part of its ongoing commitment to tackle cybercrimes, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recognizes the month of October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) #BeCyberSmart.
Being able to quickly send a text on your smartphone or being tech-savvy doesn’t make you exempt to cybercrimes. A recent study from Social Catfish, an online identity verification service, found cyber fraud against individuals age 20 or younger surged 156%.
Parents aren’t always going to be able to monitor their child’s online activity 24-7, so teaching them to be safe online is essential. At CapFed® we want your entire family to be safe when it comes to using the internet and social media channels. Listed below are a few tips and tricks taken from the National CyberSecurity Alliance and CyberSecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency you can share with your kids.
1. Just like in the real world, don’t talk to strangers. If someone emails you directly to chat or meet up, tell a parent or an adult immediately.
2. Manage your friends on social media carefully. Don’t accept a request by a follower you don’t know.
3. Create a strong (long and complex) password. Many sites are now allowing people to create passphrases so it’s more difficult for hackers to get your information.
4. Keep your information private by reviewing and updating privacy settings. You don’t want the whole world being able to access your page.
5. Be careful what you post! Remember that once you push it out on the web, it’s out there forever.
