In 1954, Capitol Federal opened its first branch in the greater Kansas City metro area, known as the "Pioneer of Johnson County." Managed by Bob Maupin, a longtime employee who later became Chief Lending Officer and board member, the Mission Branch had a unique start. Temporarily housed next to an ice cream parlor and below a dance studio, the branch's ceiling would shake during dance lessons, particularly on busy Saturday afternoons. Despite this, the Mission Branch laid the groundwork for Capitol Federal's expansion in the region.
