Insurance for the Novice Adult

Hopefully you’ve see the first two posts in this series covering a general overview of insurance for millennials and the basics of insurance for the beginning adult. When you’re ready to get that first policy, here are some tips for being prepared.

What Should I do to Prepare for a Meeting with an Insurance Agent?

To prepare for a meeting,  you should show up informed. Having more information is better than having none; if you have questions or concerns contact your insurance agent for help prior to the meeting.

If you are going in for automobile insurance, they will most likely ask for your prior insurance information also known as a declarations page. If you do not have prior insurance or the declarations page handy, then you can always bring in the title to your vehicle. Other than that, insurance agents will ask you very general information such as your name, age, address and social security number.

What to Keep in Mind

  • There are a lot of factors that go into determining the price of your insurance, so do not be surprised if you are quoted a rate that is higher or lower than your ball park estimate.

  • For automobile insurance, be prepared to pay more if you are under 25 years old. Rates significantly drop when you reach the age of 21, and again after you turn 25. Rates can also drop after renewals when you have established a history of paying on time and kept a clean driving record.

  • There is a wide range of insurance agencies and they will all quote policies differently.

  • If anything happens and you need help, call, call, call! Your insurance agent is the middleman to the insurance companies and can help you every step of the way.
Most important, when purchasing insurance it is important to ask questions if you’re unclear on any aspect of the policy. Insurance is a recurring expense, so make sure you understand what you’re paying for.

If you feel inspired to obtain an insurance quote, Capitol Federal has an independent insurance agency, Capitol Agency. Capitol Agency will be happy to answer any insurance questions you might have. Give them a call at 800-222-7312.
