NEWS RELEASE

TOPEKA, Kan. – At the conclusion of its Stay Fed with CapFed® promotion, Capitol Federal® drew the name of Alexander Van Maren of Shawnee as the winner of a gift of $5,000 worth of groceries for his family.  As the winner, Alexander received the opportunity to choose a local 501(c)3 food pantry to also receive a $5,000 gift from Capitol Federal in his honor.  His choice was Harvesters—The Community Food Network,  which received a large replica Capitol Federal check for $5,000 from Alexander and representatives of Capitol Federal, including First Vice President Rod Martin.  Harvesters is the regional Feeding America food bank serving northeastern Kansas from facilities in Topeka and Kansas City, Mo.

From November 19 through December 17, Capitol Federal invited everyone to register to win a gift of $5,000 worth of groceries for their family and also to strengthen their community with a $5,000 gift in their honor to their favorite local, 501(c)3 food pantry.   From the more than 9,200 names submitted, Alexander’s name was drawn.

Martin remarked, “We at Capitol Federal believe the holidays are a time of giving, of sharing, and we are excited Alexander will join Capitol Federal in the spirit of the season and starting the new year off by helping us present a $5,000 gift to Harvesters.   We congratulate Alexander with his choice of Harvesters as the recipient of the $5,000 food pantry gift, a gift that will make a real difference in the community, thanks to Alexander.”

“This generous donation will help Harvesters provide 25,000 meals in our region at a time of year when many families in need are struggling to decide whether to  heat their home or buy groceries,”  said Karen Haren, president and CEO of Harvesters. “Thanks to both Capitol Federal and Alexander for this gift, which will make a difference for many, many people in our region!”

“I am so excited to be a part of presenting $5,000 to Harvesters,” said Alexander.  “I could not believe it when Capitol Federal called to say my name was drawn, and as thrilled as I am to receive such a wonderful gift of groceries for my family, I am even more thrilled to join Capitol Federal in presenting this gift to Harvesters.  When I was in high school, we held food drives for Harvesters, and I am so excited to be able to give to them again. I learned then just how good they are, and I know the funds they received today are in good hands and will do so much to feed those in need within our community.”
